Emma Swan

Emma Swan

My favourite method of making has always been painting and this year I have grown into that medium and worked across a variety of others. The theme of the work I submitted for exhibition was “escapism”. I researched and developed the theme through narratives, dreams and emotions. I usually do a lot of landscape and figurative art too. But this work is a development of different styles.
My first piece is a film photograph which acts as an introduction into the theme of escape.
The still life of the books is physical method of escape. Disappearing into a story is one of the easiest ways to escape our own reality. This year I’m sure it’s something we all wanted to do. I think the loss of form in the painting with the non-dominant hand is a great allusion to the theme.
My abstract pieces are an emotional representation of escape. The brief was to create feelings without form. The colour of a mood or mindset. The pieces include, grief, confusion, loss, content, life and depression.
The final photograph is ‘The Light in a Dark Place’. It was a photograph I took that was a moment in time, the light source I used no longer exists.
The final piece is a print with intense colour graphics which has dystopian undertones.
